2010 Olympics: The gift that keeps on taking

Business, Olympics, Politics, Rants
Remember the 2010 Winter Olympics? Remember how fun they were? Remember how much is cost? Well it continues to cost the taxpaying victims of VANOC's success well into the summer as the bills just keep rolling in. ICBC reports that over $2.3 million of damage was done to VANOC's fleet of General Motors vehicles used during the Olympics and Paralympics. The 4,791 vehicles suffered a variety of scratches, dents, crunches and smash-ups that will probably contribute to the cost of your automobile insurance. Don't ya just love these guys? As of May 5, there were 4,679 claims worth $2,300.392.34 when the vehicles were gathered at one location and inspected by claims personnel. There were no payments made on 757 of the claims and damage details were not disclosed. The drivers…

Resident Evils

Observations, Of Interest, People, Politics, Rants
It's no secret that here's no shortage of scumbags in the lower mainland but the numbers seem to be growing as our useless legal system does little or nothing to slow their reign of terror. Here's a few of the most recent pieces of garbage to grace the pages of our local newspapers: On July 5, 2005 16-year-old Matthew Martins made the mistake of walking by Katherine Quinn's house. Quinn, a 23-year-old greasy-haired, bottom-feeding mother of three decided to jump Matthew and take his necklace. Matthew had other ideas and used a penknife to defend himself and stab Quinn. Matthew was chased to the Surrey Central SkyTrain station and Quinn's low-life boyfriend, 28-year-old Robert Forslund, beat him to death with Quinn instructing him to kill Matthew for what he had…

Happy Birthday Lilian Louise

Observations, People
Today is the birthday of Lilian (Anne) Louise Barker. My lovely mum passed away at the young age of 46 in early 1975 and today, June 11, 2010 would have been her 81st birthday. I was just a kid when she left us after a long battle with cancer but I remember her laugh, her grace and unending patience with her four children. In amongst my treasured childhood possessions I have a few slips of paper that mum occasionally slipped under my pillow while I slept. One note, left the night before my brother and I headed to the local aquatic centre for swimming lessons, requested that I "have a nice swim ~ and one for me". The same message stated "You're snoring!!" in large letters at the bottom of…

Two Recommendations

Entertainment, Food, Observations, Of Interest
I'm not big into recommending stuff to people I don't know but I thought some of you may enjoy these two completely unrelated visual and gastronomical items: RECOMMENDATION #1: If you enjoy quirky and inventive movies I sugest you see Kick-Ass. Yes, I know...it sounds like another dopey teen superhero flick and you're partially right. It starts out with the typical socially inept, Peter Parker-type main character that morphes into the film's superhero but it becomes uncharacteristically dark about 30 minutes in. Once you've heard an 11-year old girl use the 'C' word, all bets are off. Obviously, this isn't family or first date fare but it's a refreshing take on the typical Spider Man, Superman and other processed superhero pablum we've all become familiar with. And McLovin is in…
