My New Boss

Business, Of Interest, People
My employer, Canwest Global Communications Corp, has sold it's 46 newspapers to a group of bondholders fronted by Paul Godfrey, president and CEO of the National Post. Canwest has been operating under court supervision since 2009 and has struggled since the death of it's founder Israel Asper, it's purchase of expensive acquisitions and the downward spiral in advertising revenues for newspapers and television during the recent global recession. All combined to force David and Gail Asper, the son and daughter of Canwest Global Communications founder, to resign from the media conglomerate's board of directors and the company to come under control of it's creditors. I can't say I'm unhappy to be free of Canwest and Mr. Godfrey appears to be an astute business man, savvy politician and media manager. Here's…

Editorial Changes

It appears that the editorial page of The Province is no longer sporting the cartoons of either Bob Krieger or Dan Murphy. I won't miss Krieger's lame attempts at humour but most of Murphy's cartoons and writings made me laugh out loud. It's unfortunate that The Province Editors have decided that both must go but I suppose it's a sign of the times as newspapers continue to position themselves with the online news world. Most of Kreiger's simplistic cartoons were biased and pathetic attempts at social and political satire which, in my opinion, rarely worked. I did, however look forward to and read Dan Murphy's cartoons and outrageous musings with plenty of guffaws and head nodding. His material was usually spot-on and lambasted politicians, do-gooders and local celebrity wannabe's without…

Another Killer Set Free

Assholes, Of Interest, People, Rants, The Law
Darnell Pratt will be released from prison in June after serving less than five years of a nine year sentence for killing Grant De Patie. Mr. Pratt was caught stealing gas in a stolen Chrysler LeBaron and Grant, an employee at the Esso station, attempted to stop his car from leaving the lot. Grant was run down by Pratt and dragged to his death beneath the stolen vehicle. According to a friend of Pratt's to whom he confided after the murder, he was fully aware there was a body under the car as he sped away and heard Grant's screams as he was being dragged to his death. De Patie's body, naked except for tattered clothes around his ankles, was found 7.5 kilometres from the Esso station at the end…

The Black Three Dollar Bill

Entertainment, Of Interest, People
Kitty Kelley, colonoscopist to the stars, has released 'Oprah', her latest unauthorized celebrity biography about the leader of daytime talk shows, Oprah Winfrey. And boy, has this woman dug up the dirt on this overrated and omnipotent media queen. Read on. You may detect that I'm not a fan of Oprah or her zombie-like, middle-class female followers and Ms. Kelley's book supports some of my theories. My favourite (and the one I mention to my wife on a weekly basis) is that Oprah Winfrey is gay, her 'friend' Gayle King being significantly more than a 'friend' and her live-in partner/hanger-on/douche Stedman Graham being nothing more than a well paid beard. Shocking! So what does Ms. Kelley's book, for which she culled close to 3,000 transcripts of Winfrey's past interviews and…
