Tax Pirates

Olympics, Politics, Rants
In our modern world there are still Pirates that pillage from innocent victims, using their ill-gotten gains for nefarious and questionable deeds. I'm not talking about Somalian warlords plucking hapless victims from boats and demanding huge ransoms. I'm talking about our provincial government and their practice of pirating funds and keeping the lowly taxpayer in the dark when it comes to the 2010 Winter Olympic. These guys are the worst. Last Wednesday the NDP secured a letter from VANOC sent to the provincial government pleading for more cash. Here's what it said: "Re: Ceremony, Torch Relay and other funding. I am writing to request funding for the 2010 Opening Ceremonies and other projects. These are areas where we believe that additional funds would create further mutually beneficial outcomes as outlined…

Notes On The News

Of Interest, Olympics, People, Politics
A few notes on the news over the last few days: - Liberal Olympic Tickets: These clowns make it too easy for me by presenting another pathetic example of how the Winter Olympics is nothing more than a cash grab by politicians and select business owners. A few of the brightest bulbs within our elected Liberal government decided to allocate approximately one million taxpayer dollars to purchase Olympic event tickets to be used by Liberal MLA's and Cabinet ministers. How galling is it that we're forced to pay for this fiasco ONCE then pay again to purchase tickets for the very idiots that got us into this financial mess. Minister of State for the Olympics, Mary McNeil, responded to media questions regarding the cash payout by assuring "None on these…

What’s The Real Deal?

Olympics
The Vancouver Teacher's Association are considering a request to allow the Teaching 2010 Resistance to hold a workshop to educate teachers about the evils of our upcoming Olympic Games. The Olympic Resistance Network has distributed posters for the event wihich depicts a cartoon child dumping an Olympic mascot into a trash can with security cameras and razor wire in the background. The poster states "This is an open invitation for teaching professionals to review our critically-minded Olympics workshop, to collaborate in adapting materials for elementary students, and to learn about eh existing and growing teaching resources currently being developed." In other words this group wants their chance to teach elementary kids to hate the Olympics as much as they do. For those that have read my past rants on the…

The Olympic Money-Pit

Olympics
The finger-pointing continues as May Gregor Robertson blames a "Total failure of leadership" for the growing cost overruns of the fabulous $1.16 billion Olympic Village. It seems that there's concern regarding the city's ability to recoup its investment when the units are sold so sales of the units have been halted until after the 2010 games. Gee...who would have thunk. Pour hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer dollars into a real estate project initiated by the impending Olympics and we should all make a buck, right? Wrong. When the market tanks all bets are off boys and it looks like the taxpayers will once again be hung out to dry. As we all know, the City Of Vancouver was forced to take over financing of the project after cost…
