Paper Tiger

Of Interest, People
Tiger Woods' recent shallow, rehearsed and ridiculous apology was the low point of a career in decline. Are we really expected to believe that his 13 1/2 minute speech atones for his recent fun and frolics and his wife is willing to forgive a guy that had more sex in the last few years than most men will get in their entire lives? His little chit-chat amongst an invited group of friends and business associates was clearly created to get the word out to his fans and sponsors that he's oh so sorry and he'll try not to do it again. Well at least until he finds himself in a hotel room with a hooker, stripper or cocktail waitress (or any combination of the three) that is. This guy is…

An American point of view

Observations, Olympics, People, Rants
So what did our American neighbours think of our little Olympic opening show? Well, some were not terribly impressed. Americans have a habit of making most things bigger and better than everyone else which is one of the reasons we love 'em so much. But Canadians are a bit more reserved and do just enough to get the point across without being showoffs. So it's exceedingly painful when we witness NBC News goofballs Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer bring new meaning to the words 'confused and uninformed' as they offer this fascinating discourse while toasting marshmallows on Whistler Mountain. Behold our neighbours to the south as they continue to know little or nothing about their neighbours to the north unless it has something to do with Celine Dion...

Who else?

Events, Observations, Olympics, People
Who else could possibly be the right person to light the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics flame other than Wayne Gretzky? Nobody, that's who! I was writhing in anticipation of who would light the flame during last night's opening ceremonies and had nightmares thinking of all the bad choices that could have been made. Names like Celine Dion (shudder), Anne Murray (part of the flag carrying group ceremony in B.C. Place), Steve Fonyo (as if!), Ben Johnson (was he even allowed to watch it on TV??) or a number of nausea-inducing possibilities ran through my head as I waited for the big moment. A group comprised of Bobby Orr, Julie Payette, Anne Murray, Romeo Dallaire, Jacques Villeneuve, Barbara Ann Scott, Betty Fox (a nice touch) and Donald Sutherland marched into B.C.…
