Vancouver: City Of Garbage

Assholes, Environment, Life in Vancouver, Observations, Rants
Vancouver residents boast of living in the world's cleanest, prettiest and most pristine city in the world however this statement, and the city in general, is being buried under a mass of disgusting garbage. I live in the downtown core and take my dog for walks on the streets of downtown Vancouver. The weekends are the worst with Sunday morning a rubbish nightmare as all the drunken idiots that bus in from the outlying communities consume vast amounts of alcohol along with paper plated slices of pizza and cardboard cartons of chinese, indian and thai food. Bottles, vomit and food containers are spread over the streets and sidewalks of this city, with broken glass an obstacle course for both my dog and I as we wind our way through the…

Global Hypocrites

Economy, Environment, People, Politics, Rants
In our present culture, celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore, Robert Redford and other multi-millionaire jet-setters are quite vocal about how the rest of us should live our lives. They advise us to sell our gas-guzzlers and buy an electric or hybrid car, exchange our incandescent light bulbs with annoying 'green' low-energy light bulbs, recycle our garbage, compost our kitchen scraps and generally spend an inordinate amount of our precious time taking care of mother earth. Fair enough, but what about THEM? What do THEY personally do to make our earth better? Horror in Haiti

Environment, People
My brother's friend is a missionary who is helping in Haiti after the recent 7.0 magnitude earthquake, the largest in that area for over 200 years. She sent an email to friends and loved ones describing the scene as she tries to make a difference for Haitians caught in this monumental tragedy. Here is her email in its entirety: I just wanted to write more details about what is going on here. You will have been getting a lot of info from the news and internet. It is indescribable. I don’t think I will ever feel the same about earthquakes. Feeling them in Canada usually brought a feeling of excitement because we don’t get them often. After the earthquake hit, I had to fight the fear every time an aftershock…

Producing Garbage

Environment
We purchased a patio set last month and it was finally delivered on Friday. The set includes a gazebo, a rectangular table with 6 chairs, a loveseat, two chairs and a coffee table and was delivered in 5 large boxes. My brother volunteered to help me assemble the set and we started mid Friday afternoon, worked for a few hours and started again late Saturday morning and finished at 3pm. The total assembly time was approximately 6 hours but the assembly was a snap compared to the cleanup. This included sorting and bagging the various end caps, plastic strapping, styrofoam, plastic bags, hardware bubble packs, French and English assembly instructions, packing slips and foam padding. The garbage filled two regular garbage bags. I removed packing tape, staples and delivery information…
